The man shot by Denver police Wednesday near West High School has been identified as Antonio Blackbear.
Blackbear, 41, died of a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead early Thursday morning, according to the Denver Medical Examiner’s Office. The death has been ruled a homicide.
Police responded to the area of 10th Avenue and North Santa Fe Drive around 5 p.m. Wednesday. They said they found a man threatening people in a stopped vehicle with a handgun. When police arrived, they said he began moving toward them in a threatening manner and refused to follow commands or drop his weapon. Two officers shot him.
The man was transported to Denver Health for treatment and died of his injuries after 1 a.m. Thursday.
The Aurora Police Department is investigating the shooting in conjunction with the Denver Police Department.
