Huge police presence as ‘third body this year’ found alongside River Cam

Police, paramedics and firefighters swooped on the river Cam in Cambridge this morning (September 22) after a body was found in Jesus Green Lock, Chesterton Road.

Hugo Davies, 33, who lives on a boat along the River Cam said he woke up to the emergency service response this morning, which was a lot to take in.

He told Cambridge Live : “The first thing I knew about it was my mate came down to my boat at about 10.15am and announced I had a host of police vans and fire engines and stuff on Jesus Green.

"There were two fire engines, a river response van, three or four police cars, about 15 policemen and about two ambulances.

"It was a lot."

Hugo says that most of the emergency services personnel have now left the scene: "It was insane. The whole side of the road was taken up with police and fire engines. I hadn’t seen anything and didn’t know what was going on.

“I assumed it was either a body or a bomb or something.

"There was a blue and white boat moored just by the tent and apparently the owner woke up to a body alongside her boat this morning."

"She was quite shaken," he said "They didn’t want to hang around and talk to anyone, they’d obviously been quite shaken by it I think, so they cleared off really quickly.

“I was shocked. It’s not the first time we’ve had bodies in the river. Quite recently as well, there’s been bodies found and there wasn’t anywhere near that level of response.

“I thought it was like a bomb or someone quite extreme."

He says that this is the third body that's been found in the area over the past year: "This is the third time. It’s crazy, it really is, the amount of times this has happened.

“This level of response was not normal.”

A forensic tent was erected next to the river, and the area was cordoned off while investigators try to determine the cause of death.:

A spokesman for the force said: "Police were called today (September 22) at 10.09am to reports of a body found in Jesus Green Lock, Chesterton Road, Cambridge.

"Officers remain at the scene and an investigation into the cause of the death is ongoing."
