A 52-year-old hunter has been charged in the shooting death of a fellow hunter, who was a member of his own hunting party.
Harry Watkins was charged last week with a single county of criminally negligent homicide, a Class 5 felony, according to the 14th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
Watkins is charged with the Nov. 9 death of Simon Howell, 26, of West Virginia. The men were hunting elk in rugged terrain of western Grand County when the incident happened.
“The rules of hunting safety exist to keep this exact kind of tragedy from happening,” said Grand County District Attorney Matt Karzen in a Monday news release. “Complacency and lack of discipline is all it takes for someone to be killed.”
Watkins is scheduled to be in court for an advisement hearing on Dec. 22.
