In France, from Monday, citizens will be required to have a health pass to access restaurants, trains and other public places. These will indicate whether they have either been vaccinated for coronavirus, tested negative or have anti-bodies after recovering from the infection.

To dodge this, some anti-vaccine campaigners, taken in by disinformation about the jabs, have reportedly been trying to catch Covid.

Speaking to Le Figaro, one 25-year-old said he had stopped washing his hands in a bid to get infected.

A 20-year-old French woman told the paper she allowed a Covid positive colleague to cough on her, in hope of catching the disease.

Health experts are warning against the trend, pointing out coronavirus can cause serious health complications in younger people.

Oliver Veran, the French health minister, commented: “Even those aged 20 to 30 can have long-term consequences.

“With an illness, you can be exhausted for weeks, sometimes even months. So you shouldn’t think that you are out of danger.”

Speaking to La Chaîne Info, epidemiologist Philippe Amouyel warned French youngsters they are making a “big mistake” if they try to catch Covid.

He claimed the long-term effects of coronavirus are serious for all age groups.

Mr Amouyel added the average age of intensive care patients in French hospitals, has fallen significantly over the past few weeks.

Public Health France (PHF) figures show 3,531 new French coronavirus patients were admitted to hospital last week.

This is an increase of 92 percent on the previous week, which in turn was a rise of 51 percent of the preceding week.

In a statement PHF said: “The increase in the number of new hospitalisations and admissions in critical care accelerated last week, confirming the hospital impact of this fourth epidemic wave.”

On Thursday the French government’s plan for Covid health passes was approved by the Constitutional Court.

This is the highest constitutional authority in France.

French cities have been rocked by large protests against health passes, some of which have turned violent.

Health passes will be required to visit cafes, public transport and some shopping malls.

President Emmanuel Macron is urging French residents to get vaccinated, to fight the Covid surge.

On Friday he released a video on Instagram, in which he said: “It’s a matter of citizenship, it’s the very pact of a nation, get vaccinated if you love your family, your friends, your brothers, your sisters and your parents.”

Mr Macron also thanked “our restaurant and café owners, and our cinema, theatre and festival directors” for “the efforts which are required of them during this summer”.

Finally, the president thanked the French people, for “accepting these rules”.

In England, the Government said it planned to ask people to be fully vaccinated to enter nightclubs from late September.

Boris Johnson said he feared they could otherwise become “super spreading events”.
