Beach death horror as four ‘lifeless bodies’ found in Mexican tourist hotspot

Four dead bodies have been found by authorities near a tourist beach on the resort hotel zone of Cancun, Mexico, amid warnings of drug-related violence.

There was no immediate information on the nationalities or identities of the victims following their discovery yesterday (Monday).

The announcement of the deaths came less that a week after a US tourist was shot in the leg in the nearby town of Puerto Morelos.

Officials originally said three bodies were found near one of Cancun’s beachside hotels along the Kukulkan Boulevard, later adding that a fourth victim was found in undergrowth.

Prosecutors in the Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo said two suspects had been detained in connection with the killings, confirming that the deaths were under investigation.

Last week a US tourist was taken to a hospital in Cancun for treatment after being approached by several suspects and shot in the leg,

The US State Department issued a travel alert earlier this month warning travellers to “exercise increased caution" at Mexico’s beach resorts such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

There have been a series of acts of violence along the Caribbean coast, the heart of Mexico’s tourism industry, which has been hit by drug gang problems in the past.
