King Charles’ Coronation live TV broadcast could be hijacked by cyber-terrorists

Broadcasts of King Charles III’s Coronation could be at risk of cyber attacks, experts say.

International cyber terrorists from the likes of Iran and Russia could be eyeing up a propaganda victory by sabotaging the high-profile day.

Cyber security outfit Sophos’s Christopher Budd told the Telegraph: "Events like this are also attractive for non-state aligned activists and vandals with no agenda other than creating havoc for its own sake.

“I always say you can think of these global events like a big cake at a picnic, on the blanket, on the grass. It's hugely attractive so, it's going to draw ants."

Similar events in the past – Like Harry and Meghan’s wedding in 2018 and William and Kate’s in 2011 are also believed to have fallen victim to attempted cyber attacks.

Steps to negate this are expected to have been taken however as the UK bids to protect itself from malicious outside intent.

National Cyber Security Centre head Ciaran Martin told the outlet: "Prudent steps will have been taken to prevent any disruption to the Coronation and deny any propaganda impact from cyber attackers."

While attacks could come from non-state actors, there are also chances that some government branches – like Russia’s GRU – could try to spoil the day.

A source told the paper: "The GRU hackers are very sophisticated and if anyone knows how to knock a broadcast or web streaming feed online, it is them.

“They have spent the last year in Ukraine targeting infrastructure such as radio stations."
