Floods in South Korea leave 22 people dead as thousands flee their homes

South Korea has experienced days of relentless rain, leaving at least 22 people dead and 14 people missing due to landslides, floods, and other incidents, the government has said.

The casualties occurred primarily in the central and southeastern regions, as reported by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

Initial reports from the Interior Ministry indicated that five people lost their lives when landslides triggered by heavy downpours engulfed their homes.

Additionally, two others perished in landslide-related accidents. However, the cause of death for the remaining fatalities was not specified in the latest ministry report.

Since Tuesday, torrential rains have also left 14 people missing, while 13 others have suffered injuries since Thursday, according to the report.

As of Saturday afternoon, more than 2,000 people are still staying in temporary shelters.

Moreover, the adverse weather conditions have led to the cancellation of 20 flights, the suspension of regular and bullet train services, and the closure of around 140 roads, as reported by the ministry.

South Korea’s weather agency predicts that some parts of the country will continue to experience heavy rain until Sunday.

President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was in Ukraine at the time, has urged Prime Minister Han Duck-soo to mobilise all available resources to address the ongoing disaster.

The central regions, specifically the city of Gongju and the county of Cheongyang, have witnessed the highest levels of rainfall, with both areas receiving over 600 millimetres (24 inches) of rain since July 9.
